I love teaching this age range.  It is a key time to introduce important drawing and observational skills.

Developing creative thinking abilities and overall confidence in the development and experiementation of ideas and use of material is important and forms the base for a more mature approach at Key Stage 4

Key to GCSE Art and Design / Photography is student ability to work independantly researching topics of study and generating solid, masterful observational work.

Projects develop as students use Artist, Designers, Craftsmen and Photographers to inspire new ways of working.

Using new found skills, students enjoy developing work thorough experimentation, discovering new and unique ways of working which result in individual and creative art.

The presentation the final work has traditionally been at an end of year exhibition.

I have been successful in enabling Year 11 students to gain GCSE grades A* to C in Art

When I have had the pleasure of  teach ‘A’ level students, I bolster confidence in their artistic practises, driving them to embrace the development of ideas drawn from research and experimentation.  Through increasing their subject knowledge ,understanding of process and practise, I scaffold their progress and achievement, allowing pupils to progress with vision.  I challenge students to go beyond that which may initially seem daunting, to new heights.

Enrichment

Experiencing Art, Design and Craft outside of the classroom is key to promoting Art as a relevant choice at KS4 and beyond.  Through trips I have organised and attended, (to local ornate gardens, the coast and the National Portrait Gallery,) my Art GCSE candidates were able to make and respond to classic and contemporary art, experiencing its power and value.  This led to discussion, ideas and a greater enthusiasm for possibilities, both in their current work and beyond.  I have always welcomed students to art session during lunch and after-school and would expect to continue this, as I have found that, the provision of wider opportunities, which allow for individual enrichment outside of lesson time, have been essential to progress.

Visits from relevant creative practitioners have helped students I have taught make links with Art as part of the wider world.  Contemporary television cameraman Joe May, welcomed my invitation to talk to and work with Year 8 students to produce short films.  This project built on traditional observation and drawing skills of figures and faces from life drawings and moved through a number of processes, to the screening of their films.
